"Although Christ's Nativity has been celebrated since the 4th century, most of the English customs we are familiar with today are as recent as the mid-19th century. Many of the early ceremonies were rooted in pagan beliefs, and some customs, like wassailing, still survive.
The Protestant Reformation condemned most of these pagan customs as superstitious and banned public celebrations of Christmas. The Puritans abolished all celebrations after the Civil War, also. Fervor for the holiday declined even into the Georgian Era. It wasn't until Prince Albert married Queen Victoria and brought many German customs with him that Christmas began to gain popularity again. "-- Christmas in Victorian England
It's Defrauding Fate's first Holiday Season! No matter what you celebrate, there's no denying the warm cheerful feeling that combats the cold weather outdoors. Snuggling by the fire while father tells his best stories. Mother and the children sing carols. Grandmother bakes gingerbread men.
Rich, poor, young or old, there is nothing in the world like a good English Christmas.
Defrauding Fate will kick off its first Holiday Celebration by hosting a Secret Santa event! Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, there is still a warm loving feeling that comes with giving to those you love.
If you'd like to participate, reply to this thread with the character you'd like to be listed by Wednesday's meeting. On that day, we'll sort everyone and give them a giftee.
Rules:
- Santas may NOT tell their giftee that they have them. There will a thread to tell your Santa what you are interested in, so there should be no reason to spoil the surprise.
- Giftees may not encourage their Santas to tell. There's fun in not knowing!
- Santas should be aware that not everyone has the same skills and budget. Even if you can afford to give a Nintendo 3DS, know that you may only get a simple drawing in return. We're celebrating the spirit of giving and not necessarily the gift it self.
- Please only sign up if you know FOR SURE you can give something. No one wants to put all that love and work into giving to someone else only to get nothing in return.
After you get your giftee, you have until Christmas Eve to get your gift to them.
Have fun and a wonderful Holiday!
