Life Story: Born on the crisp winter evening of January 26, 1871, in Paris, France, Corinne Delacroix was destined to live a life filled with a lot of love and happiness – or so her parents hoped. Corinne was born just after the fall of Emperor Napoleon III, marking the end of the French Monarchy and the introduction to the Heads of State system of governing. Despite the economical ruin France was facing at the time, Corinne and the Delacroix family lived a fairly easy life. They had a beautiful estate that overlooked the city of Paris and Corinne was the center of attention among her family and peers. Then, just after her thirteenth birthday, things changed. It was during a tour of Europe that it happened.
While in Italy, Corinne got separated from her parents and was subsequently kidnapped by three men. She went missing for a little over two months, where she was sold into prostitution at a high price because of her status and then was carted between handlers all over Europe. She was saved by authorities, eventually, and the kidnappers were sent to hang, but the damage had been done. Corinne came back to France with a sullied innocence and an apprehension for physical contact that no one could seem to cure her of.
Weeks after her return, in the wake of a nightmare, she called for help and she and Olivia were introduced for the first time. Olivia, nameless at the time, introduced herself as a guardian Angel to Corinne and offered her healing. Corinne accepted, and gave her the name Olivia because of the peaceful, serene look in her eyes. There was, however, a stipulation to being in contract with an Angel. Unlike demon contracts, rather than taking souls, Olivia and Corinne must save one. Corinne knew this would be difficult, but she accepted it and since then Olivia has been working under the pretense of being Corinne’s personal maid.
The summer after her sixteenth birthday, Corinne’s parents decided she needed to get away from France for a while and the memories that lingered there. Corinne, Olivia and her family, for the time being, are residing in a summer home on the outskirts of London.
Sample Roleplay:
Corinne sighed and looked out the window of the train car. She had a messy strand of her long hair in between two fingers as she worked to twine it around the index. They would be arriving in London shortly. Beside her, her maid Olivia was working on a piece of embroidery and between them sat a copy of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland. She’d finished it halfway into the train ride and now had nothing better to do than observe the scenery outside. Most of the Delacroix household staff had been sent to their London townhouse a day early to take the majority of their things including the carriages. Among the belongings was Corinne’s favorite veiled hat. She wished she had it with her now as the sun rays beat down upon her head through the window.
She shifted in her seat and rested her head back, closing her eyes for a few moments. Around her she could hear the quiet murmurings of the other passengers and the occasional thud of luggage rolling around as the train moved. It had only been several minutes before the whistle sounded, signaling that they were coming upon the train station. Corinne opened her eyes to see her mother and father already gathering their things. She turned to Olivia. “My bonnet is in the side pouch inside my suitcase. When the train stops, will you get it for me?”
Olivia bowed her head. “Of course, my lady.”
As they pulled into the station, the quiet murmurings of the train car grew louder. Everyone was preparing to leave. She stood up when the train pulled to a halt, the loud fsssssssst of steam leaving the top of the train seeming to echo throughout the station. Corinne sat up from her seat and smoothed her skirts, then followed as her parents left the train with Olivia trailing dutifully behind her with their things.
Once they had stepped off the train, Olivia reached into Corinne’s suitcase and procured a light lavender bonnet decorated in lace and ribbons. She paused briefly to set the belongings down and fasten the bonnet around the younger girl’s head, then stepped back smiling. “There. Better?”
“Much. Thank you, Olivia,” Corinne smiled lightly and linked her arm with the maid, following after her parents.
