The horse-drawn carriage wheels squeaked and creaked as it made its way along the dirt path. Slight swaying was all that deterred the riders within, as they waited patiently to arrive at their destination.
"Oh Lady Elizabeth, it's Ciel's birthday! Aren't you excited?" The chestnut haired maid turned ethusiastically towards her mistress, eyes shining with genuine mirth, hands clapped together. The blonde girl in question turned herself towards where the woman was sitting with a cheerful smile, clutching a small package in her hands.
"Of course I am, Paula! This is one of the only days that's entirely about Ciel. It's a day he should be really really happy..." Her voice trailed off, and her attention was brought back to the small, ornate box in held on her lap. A birthday was supposed to be a time of laughter and cheer, celebrating the day when a person was born into this world. It was the occasion almost every child waited for, yet, even then...he never seemed happy at all. Even as she insisted on a party, threw up streamers and balloons, served cakes and decorated the entire mansion, Ciel didn't smile. Her last effort...it had always been the present. Stroking the the ribbon that wrapped around all sides of her gift absentmindedly, Elizabeth let her expression fall solemn.
"Paula...do you think Ciel will like his gift? Do you think...that it'll actually work like the man had claimed?" What she'd gotten him this year was a stone called the Stone of Happiness. The merchant she'd bought it from told her that holding onto it for a long time brought gradual joy to the soul, and that was a more than satisfying description to get her sold. Elizabeth had animatedly demanded to purchase the stone, for it seemed absolutely perfect for Ciel's present! Even if the happiness wasn't right away...and even if she didn't see it in the instant he touched it, at least she could comfort herself in knowing hat someday, somehow, Ciel would feel even a bit more at ease each day.
"Most definitely! And even if the stone doesn't do what the merchant said, the thought is just as good," the maid answered, completely confident in her speech. But even so, Elizabeth couldn't help how her hopes and desires sank at the possibility of the stone not working. That was what this was all about! Staring down at the little box, the blonde girl's expression started to waver.
"No, no it's not! The whole point of this is give Ciel happiness! If the stone doesn't work...if it doesn't do what it's supposed to...then...then..." Her bottom lip quivered and she now cast a rueful glare at the object she'd thought would make the perfect birthday present, her grasp tightening around its square form. "Then it's useless!"
Flinging the cube across the carriage onto the opposite seat, she could feel the small tears welling up in the corner of her eyes. Her only present was ruined...and now she couldn't give Ciel anything. As Paula scrambled to retrieve the package, Elizabeth simply pouted and set her eyes on her now empty lap.
"My Lady..." Paula's voice came soft and tender. Emerald eyes widened a fraction as her maid gently put the present back in her hands. "Ciel will be happy to receive this. You bought it was such pure intentions, how could it be useless? You'll never know if you don't give it to him." Wiping the tears off of the young girl's face with a spare cloth, "And I'm sure Ciel wouldn't be too pleased to see his fiancée come to celebrate his birthday crying, now would he? So cheer up and just give it to him! Besides, look! We're almost at the mansion now."
Sniffling one last time, the blonde looked up and saw the Phantomhive estate just up ahead. Curling her fingers around the violet container, she gave Paula a soft smile. "You're right...thank you, Paula."
As they came to a halt at the front entrance, Elizabeth wasted no time flinging open the carriage door and racing to the mansion. Barreling into the building and up the stairs, her face lit up as she spotted Ciel just coming down.
"CIEEEL!" she cried as she drew him into a spiraling hug. "Happy birthday! I got you a gift! Open it now!" Presenting the small box in both hands towards its receiver, Elizabeth's eyes glowed with cheerfulness. The overwhelmed boy hesitantly took the gift, and pulled the ribbon off. Opening the lid, he blinked at its contents.
"A...A stone?" The girl enthusiastically clasped her hands over his and the box.
"It's not just a stone! It's called a Stone of Happiness! They say if you carry it around with you for a long time, then eventually you'll become happier and happier!" Closing her eyes and holding his hands more firmly, she continued, "Please...promise me you'll always carry it around with you. Never let it go."
"I-I'll be sure to do that...Thank you, Elizabeth."
The bubbly girl looked back at him and smiled.
"I've told you call me Lizzy! Now, let's decorate this mansion for your party! Paula, ring the bells!"
(OOC: I...don't normally post this long, I promise. I got kind of carried away with the scene though so...yeah. Hopefully I did Lizzy good enough xD)
